Aboriginal Flag 1971

This flag was designed by Aboriginal Elder Harold Thomas in 1971 and first displayed on 12 July 1971, National Aborigines’ Day, Victoria Square, Adelaide. Yellow represents the sun (giver of life) and yellow ochre. Red represents the red earth (relationship to the land) and red ochre. Black represents Aboriginal peoples. The flag was recognized under Federal legislation in July 1995.
